All of the lamps collected by the Take Back the Light program will be recycled responsibly at Aevitas Inc. in Ayr, Ontario. Aevitas is an Ontario Ministry of the Environment approved facility.

Participants in Take Back the Light have a few options for transporting spent lamps to the recycling facility:

  • Distributors participating in Take Back the Light may be able to pick-up spent lamps from their customers when they deliver new lamps and transport them to a central storage centre. When quantities warrant, lamps will be picked up by Aevitas. Reverse take-back is the most effective way to reduce the transportation costs related to lamp recycling
  • For participants not using a Take Back the Light distributor, they can use their own transport operators to deliver to Aevitas, or Aevitas has a fleet of transport vehicles to pick-up fluorescent lamps

  • Lamps move on the conveyor to a negative pressure containment area
  • Lamps are then broken in the negative pressure machine to allow the capture of glass, aluminum, brass, and phosphor-mercury powder
  • The phosphor-mercury powder is put into the retort treatment unit where it is heated to separate the mercury from the phosphor powder
  • The triple distillation process cleans the mercury, thereby making it eligible for reuse
  • The mercury is collected and allowed to cool to liquid form and then sent to Bethlehem Apparatus in Hellertown, Pennsylvania in one ton containers where it is triple distilled and then resold
